SATURDAY NIGHT, FILM NIGHT.

we watched Iron Lady on sunday. well, some of it. we gave it up within less than an hour. the constant time shift was just too annoying. that and the fact we both new it wouldn’t have a happy ending. the bitch is still alive

image

saturday was different. saturday we watched a cracking film.

image

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. a british film about a group of retirees who have the chance to stay in the aforementioned hotel. Maggie Smith, Judi Dench (two dames for the price of one) Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy to name a few were the stars. and acted it perfectly. a gentle combination of the right amount of pathos and humour. i don’t know how this film slipped me by for so long. loved it. 10/10.

and so to next week. we’re off to the flicks this time. twice in a fortnight for me after taking The Boy to see The Hobbit (a tale for another day). i’m taking The Enemy to see this!

and i am really looking forward to it. full report will follow sunday.

A NIGHT OUT WITH THE BOYS (AND GIRLS)

some of you may remember THIS post from 2009 when Dinners and myself went to see the specials.

well last night it was time for the boy’s first ever gig, and who better for him to see than The Specials?

038

up, washed and dressed, and ready to go.

004

some a bit more eager than his dad. if that was possible.

005

managed to get to notts arena, sort the boy out with a t and a badge, sort his dad out with a pint (or three) and hang about for the rest of the #sfrcollective.

007

looked nice those hot dogs. tasted nice too.

008

nearly as big as the boy himself! told the boy i would try and snaffle him one of those posters, but every time i tried a member of security came past. and after they’d all already gone. grrr…

009

turned out the rest of rent a mob were already inside the gig, so it seemed the chance to meet them had passed. oh well, into the arena we go then. second support band, By The Rivers were on. not overly fussed. Ben told me later that Stone Foundation were very good. i always manage to miss the good supports.

“it’s loud!” said the boy.

“you aint heard nowt yet fella” was the reply…..

010

they finished, the lights came up, and after some furious tweeting along wandered Ben, Carl and Fiona! 3 twitter friends finally made flesh. and like the complete set of arses we are, not one of us took a photo!

as they were setting the stage up, someone must have caught a bass string cos there was a ‘kerdung’ and a thundering through the floor. “what was that?” asked the boy. “THAT, well, i told you it was going to get loud yes? well, that was the bass guitar”. he seemed to get even happier!

011

thirsty stuff this gig going. pint of Liffy Water? the apple doesn’t fall far.

012

time to show off purchases. HIS choice of T-shirt. i’d have gone for a “date” one, but hey, his decision.

013

gotta have a badge too. (i got nowt. wasn’t about me last night)

044

and then…. AND THEN! THE SPECIALS hit the stage!

“why must you record my phone calls?”

014

016

happy much?

017

018

019

just when you think things can’t get any better, some random bloke walks past and hands the boy a sheet of paper. “here you go young man”ah, ANOTHER flyer for some after show party or what not…

NO! NO WAY HAVE YOU JUST BEEN GIVEN THAT! JAMMY LITTLE SOD!

020

040

i tried my damndest at Leeds to get one of those! and at most gigs i have been to. he gets one at his first?

ben & carl seem to be enjoying it. (white glasses, red shirt)

021

ah, thats a better one. just

034

more Specials?

035

032

031

030

029

i have to admit, my facade of manliness left me completely as they played Monkey Man. this is a song the boy grew to love as a toddler in the days of the old analogue Sky channel P-Rock. firstly the Reel Big Fish version, but as he grew older, he admitted The Specials version was his favourite. so to be skanking and singing along to it, with him, at his very first gig, well, dad kinda lost it for a moment!

028

027

026

025

024

023

all good things come to an end though, and that was true of last night. a rousing version of You’re Wondering Now and lights up. quick wave and shout to the #sfrcollective and we’re out of there.

a safe and steady journey home, calling at some services to empty the tank, then up to the enemy’s mums to collect the hound, then a Maccy D’s and home to bed.

up this morning and ooh, wonder what the boy might put on? ha ha, bingo.

039

and what does he want to listen to? yup. ah, my boy!

045

the only question yet to answer from last night….

“who we going to see next dad?”

ttfn folks.

GROWING UP. GETTING OLD.

today is a big day. a special day.

today is the boy’s first day at senior school.

005

yes, on a friday! he has to go in to sort out planners, and all the usual first day stuff, but also to get his thumb scanned. this is how you apparently pay for school dinners in 2011. dunno about you guys, but we had tickets! we had to line up every monday and buy five for the week. (or not bother and buy cigs instead)

anyhoo, he was up when i got home this morning at half six. i don’t think he’s ever been up that earl;y for school before! but he’s been eager to go all summer holidays. which to be frank has been a little odd. that said, he’s been a little nervous this week.

but off he went. in his new uniform;

021

019

looked bloody smart too he did. i admit there were tears. but i’m ok now. i can’t wait to hear how it all went.

i feel so proud. and so bloody old.

watch this space.

OOH, SHINY NEW.

i have succumb.

oh yes… i am weak.

for at least a couple of years now i have turned my nose up at any mention of the iPhone. i always wrote them off as faddy, and much overhyped.

however. i had a go on a mates iPhone 4. oh boy. and my contract was due to be renewed… so, i have one.

39f61940-8591-456d-9c29-839fc9db802a

and truthfully? i don’t know why i didn’t get one before. yes, yes, yes you can buy apps, yes you can use it as an i pod. but it’s much much more than that. it’s like a tiny netbook/laptop! and i love it. i’ve had mine nearly two weeks now and almost every day i discover something else i can do, without having to sit here at the pc. irony that i am sat here using the pc to tell you about it? no, thats only because i have just finished uploading last nights radio show.

i won’t go on too long because i REALLY don’t want to end up like one of the folks that put me off so long. i have tried to not get all nerdy about it. but had to tell you. i’m sorry. i shall just leave you with some of the wonderful photo’s i have been able to take with it.

oh yes, and someone else has got an early birthday present…. but before you all start to criticise us buying him one, remember he starts at senior school this august and will have to travel 10 miles there and back every day and we want him to have a decent phone. he’s had a cheap one and an iPod that he has proved over the last 2 years that he can look after, and he will be paying the monthly rental out of his own pocket money every month. he’s a good lad. he deserves it.

I’VE BEEN A LITTLE PREOCCUPIED OF LATE

as you can probably tell. i keep telling myself i will start to blog more frequently again, and i fully intend to. but there are still some things i need to straighten out before i do so, so bear with me and enjoy the sporadic cartoons and other nonsensical things i DO post.

one of the things i have been doing is this!
i’ve to contribute to a music review website.

SALLY’S GIG REVIEWS

here’s what it looks like. GO HAVE A READ.

*CUE ‘JOE 90’ THEME*

we got a letter from school the other day saying that the boy was struggling to read the board.

the enemy took him to the opticians thursday.

this is the result.

he’s perfectly happy with the fact that he has to wear them. and his friends are jealous because they want to wear some.

how times change huh?
